In 2014, Baptist Health celebrated its 60th anniversary. From humble beginnings as a small community hospital, it has grown over the years to become a world-class healthcare organization comprised of seven hospitals, and over thirty urgent care centers in Monroe, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, with plans to expand further north.

With 2,300 physicians and 15,000 employees, Baptist Health is one of the largest employers in South Florida. This healthcare organization serves around 1 million patients per year and for over three decades, CEO Brian E. Keeley has been instrumental in bringing patient care to the forefront.

“He is the mastermind and engineer behind what is at the root of Baptist Health’s success and that is patient-centered healthcare,” explained Baptist Health Corporate Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mario Mendez. “Customer service is important, but what’s more important is customer satisfaction.”

This top-notch customer care begins with 24/7 call center support managed by Baptist Health International’s multilingual personnel. Other exceptional programs include: the Center for Robotic Surgery, one of the top robotic surgery programs in the nation; the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, which conducts clinical trials on minimally invasive treatments; and the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, which provides care to many of South Florida’s professional sports teams. International physicians can benefit from the knowledge of Baptist Health’s specialists by participating in a free two to three week shadowing program.

Baptist Health is accredited by the Joint Commission, the largest and most prestigious form of accreditation in healthcare. BHI provides consulting services for international hospitals seeking accreditation by Joint Commission International. Baptist Health International also works with partners across Latin America and the Caribbean to consult on the construction of new facilities and assist hospitals with the development of their medical staff.

“Our intent is to expand the reach of our medical services and to go as far-reaching as we can. That includes our partners in the Caribbean and Latin America,” Dr. Mendez stated.

The oncology program is the crown jewel of the Baptist Health network, with the $450 million Miami Cancer Institute slated to open in December 2016. The center will include proton beam therapy, a revolutionary radiation technology that targets cancer without damaging surrounding healthy tissue. This treatment is available at only fourteen hospitals in the US, and will be the closest proton beam program for patients in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Baptist Health is currently exploring strategic partnerships with healthcare institutions in Brazil to collaborate on its rapidly expanding oncology programs.
